Whilst PewDiePie/KSI and Freelee the Banana Girl/Cassey Ho are all fighting publicly and spreading the drama llama throughout the YouTube community, we’re so glad other creators like Ryan Higa exist… as he’s come up with an ingenious way to end all of this madness. All you need to do is stand in front of a mirror, and choose to roast yourself instead of other people – and it looks like other creators are starting to take notice!
Uploaded over the weekend, Ryan introduces the world to the ‘Roast Yourself Challenge’, with the idea being that “this challenge is basically to look at yourself as if you’re another person and then do exactly what the title says – roast yourself. Once you realise and call yourself out on your flaws, it’s a lot harder to make fun of someone else’s flaws”. Even though Ryan openly addresses the drama problem, he makes no direct reference to individual creators who need to take a chill pill – aside from trying to drag Felix by called him “Poop-diepie”.
To kick off the challenge, Ryan presents his own personal roast in rap form and takes the piss out of his old videos, bleached hair and the fact he once cried back in the day over his mom in a video. Why is this important though? Why does he feel that roasting yourself is the only option left for this drama-filled community? According to him, “we’re always judging other people… Lets stop the drama. Stop making fun of each other… When you roast yourself, no one gets hurt”, which is so freaking real it hurts.
Even though Ryan finishes off the challenge by calling out other YouTubers such as Timothy deLaGhetto and Jenna Marbles to take part in their own version, he makes a really prominent message about the changing community on YouTube. He mentions that back in 2006, creators would help each other out and if any sort of drama or hatred happened between channels, it would NOT be discussed openly. But now we flash forward to 2016 and now it’s suddenly a trend to upload “dedicated vlogs to talk crap about one another”.
