‘Team Internet’ is a cover-all phrase that refers to all people who a part of the online creative community; whether as a creator, a fan or both. When I say ‘Team Internet’ I really mean this whole cool world that we all take part in (especially here at Unicorns) – but what exactly does ‘Team Internet’ really mean? Why is it so hard for people offline (older people) to understand what makes Team Internet so magical? I’m gonna break it all down, right here.
Yeah But – What Is It?
Okay, okay I’ll get more specific. If you love YouTubers, Viners, Twitch streamers (etc) then you are on the way to being a member of Team Internet. The next step is to embrace what makes Team Internet special: a lack of cynicism, team work – and generally just not being a jerk online. As I have previously discussed, the most wonderful thing about Team Internet is that it’s built on positivity. This is partly a reaction to the rest of the internet which, as I’m sure you know, is basically overwhelmingly negative (just look at literally any comment section literally anywhere). This is demonstrated whenever a scandal breaks out in the online community. If someone we love is attacked, we protect them and if someone is revealed to be problematic, they are swiftly cast out by the community.
It’s All For One And One For All
Another element that makes Team Internet just so damn special is its selflessness. Instead of being competitive and jealous the strongest vibes are positive. When someone from Team Internet succeeds, the rest of the team isn’t annoyed, they’re overjoyed. Just look at the reaction when a creator wins an award – fans and fellow creators come together to celebrate and congratulate them. Of course, as always, there’s a few bad apples out there, but overwhelmingly the spirit of Team Internet is one of unity. This stands out from a lot of elements of the traditional media, which can be quite cut-throat. You can see an example of this in the awards that we held at the end of last year (that Dan and Phil won) – they could have been a brutal battle of fandom against fandom, but instead it was taken as opportunity to celebrate the YouTubers we love.
Are There Weaknesses?
Look, let’s not pretend that Team Internet is perfect. It’s a huge group of people of all kinds – and statistically all of those people can’t be nice. But what makes Team Internet amazing (in my humble opinion), is that it doesn’t let the weakest link in the chain (jerks) hold the rest of the team back. It’s all about working together to move forward, make cool things and then watch the hell out of them. That’s ultimately why we decided to start We The Unicorns and its the same reason we come to work every day – cos we think this community is freaking awesome and want to write about it forever. But what does Team Internet mean to you? Let us know in the comments below or on our Facebook page, and have a lovely day.
