The world was rocked with the news of David Bowie’s death this morning. The pop legend passed away after a fight with cancer, on the night of Sunday 10th January – just two days after both his 69th birthday and the release of his final body of work, Blackstar.
Not only was Bowie a record-breaker, a trendsetter, and an innovator of the arts; but he also was and always will be an inspiration to many aspiring musicians; many of whom share their love for Bowie on our home turf of YouTube. To honour his memory, we picked out some of our favourite covers of his greatest hits that can be found on the site:
Commander Chris Hadfield – “Space Oddity”
An obvious choice has to be this cover from astronaut and social media sensation Commander Chris Hadfield, who filmed and recorded this spacey rendition of Bowie’s most iconic hit – in actual space. You don’t get more dedicated than that.
Lizzie Tupman – “Moonage Daydream”
Following the resurgence of the song’s popularity after appearing in Guardians Of The Galaxy, this simple cover from musician Lizzie Tupman proves that Bowie’s ethereal 1971 release also sounds just as effective in its spirit when played as a stripped-back acoustic piece.
Ji-Sook Yim – “David Bowie Piano Medley”
Who doesn’t love a medley? It turns out that Bowie’s greatest hits all flow together beautifully, especially when strung together in a beautiful piano composition such as the one above from Ji-Sook Yim; you almost wouldn’t believe this was actually 11 songs played side-by side…
SongstaForLife – “Magic Dance”
Bowie’s stint as Jareth the Goblin King in Jim Henson movie Labyrinth makes everybody feel a lot of different feelings – but there’s no denying that the music, under Bowie’s direction, was awesome. A capella composer Brandon Toy (aka SongstaForLife) put together this super silly arrangement of the iconic “Magic Dance” with his pals, and we think it’s a perfect tribute!
The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain – “Life On Mars?”
Not strictly YouTubers, but still musicians who share their quirky interpretations with the world on the site, the Ukulele Orchestra assembled this super-emotive rendition of Listen close for some amazing tie-ins from the work of Frank Sinatra, the Who, and Stevie W0nder…
Federico Borluzzi – “Lazarus”
The video for Bowie’s haunting final single “Lazarus” was released just a few short days ago, but Italian musician Federico Borluzzi had already showed the song some love when he posted this simple guitar/harmonica cover in late December. While we enjoy the cover, it’s amazing to think there’s no way Federico could have known the gravity of his tribute.
