YouTube has overhauled its approach to creators, with far more emphasis being placed on helping smaller YouTubers. YouTube has long been criticised for focusing far more on its biggest creators at the expense of up-and-comers. The website has clearly recognised that there was room for improvement and have now implemented a new system with unlocks rewards for creators along every step of their subscriber journey. Before we jump into it, let’s just quickly recap on how the reward system has worked up to this point. For the last few years, rewards have been presented to YouTubers in the form of ‘Play Buttons’ at the point where they reach 100,000 subscribers (silver play button), one million subscribers (gold play button) and ten million subscribers (diamond play button).

This system was nice, but it presented somewhat of a steep climb to newer ‘Tubers, who had to wait until 100,000 subs before they could get a slice of the action. The new system remedies this by starting the festivities off at zero subscribers – that’s right, zero subscribers – and then adding further rewards at 100o and onwards and upwards. Take a look to work out which level you are, using our convenient guide:
Graphite: 0 Subscribers – 1K Subscribers
This is the starter level. Everyone starts at graphite until they hit 1,000 subscribers. As you can see, this level gives you the ability to learn about making video and make money from your video creations.
Opal: 1k Subscribers – 10 k Subscribers
You’ve reached 1K subs (congrats!) and reached the next stage. You’ll now be able to take advantage of the more social elements of YouTubing. It’s at this point that I should specify that these new levels sadly do not come with their own themed play button trophy – although I’d certainly like to see whatever the hell YouTube would whip up for an ‘opal’ play button.
Bronze: 10K Subscribers – 100K Subscribers
10K eh? Pretty nice. Things are getting serious for you – and so the perks are too!
Silver & UP: 100K+ Subscribers
And now we arrive back at the original Play Buttons (silver, gold and diamond) that started this whole crazy fun.
