If you ask anyone what their favourite Vines are, they will always have at least one answer; and then will probably come back to you seconds later with another five. The platform has been so unique, and changed the face of online video – but sadly, its final day is here.
We were shocked to learn that Twitter had plans to end Vine as we know it; and even more so when they gave today as its date of retirement. So in honour of Vine’s final day, we asked everyone on our team – even the gang over at PopBuzz – to share their all-time favourite Vines, and tell us why. Strap yourselves in and prepare for laughs, some mild nostalgia, , and maybe just a couple of tears…
The Sand Guardian
“This Vine is clearly meant to be a silly goof between friends, but it’s composition is perfect. The way the second guy leaps in, the monotone of the Sand Guardian’s voice and the dissonance of the “f*ck off”; it’s all perfect. Have you read this analysis before on Tumblr? Maybe. But it’s all true. This Vine is the bee’s knees.”
“To this day, literally NOTHING has filled my cold dead heart with as much joy as this grown-ass man dancing down the street to the sweet tones of Run Away With Me. And that’s all thanks to Vine… and Queen of Six Second Memes, Carly Rae Jepsen. #BuyEmotionOnITunes”
CHAZ P. UBAGHS
I Will Always Love You / When Happy Cloud Gets Bored
“Both from 2013, these two vines highlight just how weird and beautifully creative Vine was in its early days.”
“Perfect comedy timing and loads of floff. 12/10. Would Vine again”
Tub Time With Rihanna
“Bo Burnham managed to make Vine into an extension of his stand-up and had loads of classics, but none were quite as funny as the sight of a grown man spinning in a bath while singing Rihanna.”
I Love Babbage’s
“I love word play, and Nick Robinson proved even the stupidest word. can be played with. Also, I love Babbage’s.”
Mankind Stands No Chance #run
“This song and f*cking trend was everywhere on Vine and it was awful. However there’s something too delightful in seeing Planet Earth’s most destructive thing (the human being) being chased down by something as seemingly innocent as a beach umbrella.”
One of those moments!
“The short running time of a Vine, coupled with the lack of any need for production means that a Vine could truly be about anything. This meant that opening a Vine was always something of a ride, because you could never truly know what you were about to watch (unless it was a Vine from the Spotlight page, in which case you were almost certainly going to watch a fuckboi making a weirdly racist joke). The true epitome of the plot twist vine is this stone cold classic from Vine maestro Gabriel Gundacker, which manages to not only shock and entertain – but also educate people about the dangers and dubious dealings of The Halliburton Company”
(EDITOR’S NOTE: Benedict you couldn’t just give me a sentence on why you like it could you)
Fre Shavoca Do
“It includes avocado and someone saying words wrong but on purpose how else am I meant to explain this vine Liam”
“I love the absurdity of this Vine. Two dogs driving a 4×4 vehicle on what appears to be a frozen lake (could be a carpark?), soundtracked by a One Direction album track – it doesn’t get more WTF than that. A truly iconic Vine.”
CHARLEYY (a third time)
Cat Saying YASSS
“It’s a cat just saying YAS. My favourite Vine from last year was a cat too, so how could I not put a cat video into the ultimate favourites? I wish I was this cat.”
Besties ft. Gavin
“This Vine has everything: Drama, intrigue, suspense, brotherhood. Did the lizard bite Gavin? Of course, it did. But we all make mistakes and Gavin is offering a form of redemption. A moving tale. Truly.”
There literally are just too many good g.d. Vines in the world; and even just trying to come up with one favourite meant that half of us remembered another that we wanted to feature. We’ll honestly miss this platform.
