Toby “Tobuscus” Turner was recently accused of multiple accounts of sexual abuse and drugging a previous girlfriend. In the days that have followed after only Toby’s ex-girlfriend April spoke up, we’ve seen videos and social posts from previous lovers including Jaclyn Glenn, Melanie Murphy and Turner’s former assistant Clare Lourdes.
Since the accusations were first published on April’s Tumblr on Friday, debate has been raging about whether they’re true or not, the mental state of Kate Elliot (who also accused Turner of drugging her) and whether the authorities should step in. However, it was Melanie Murphy‘s video in response to the allegations that really hammered home a key point – consent.
Speaking in her video, Melanie ended by video by saying “Please just remember that it’s OK to say no and to have your voice heard” Speaking passionately throughout the video, Melanie reiterates to viewers how important it is to feel comfortable with someone to the point that you can say no if you’re not happy to have a sexual experience with him or her. From all the allegations around being drugged and sexual abused, one thing it remains important to do is teach people to be confident to say no whilst also teaching people that no means no.
In light of this, we’ve done a round up on some of the most informative and empowering videos on sexual consent. We hope you watch the videos below and take something from each and everyone of them.
Tea And Consent
Whilst the police making a video about tea might sound like the most English thing ever, this animated video is an educational sensation which likens every type of sexual situation you’ll likely ever be in to making someone a cup of tea. From what to do if they change their mind to whether you should make them drink tea if they’re become unresponsive- this video is a must watch and we’d suggest sharing it with friends and siblings of all ages.
The Consent Song
Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs’ song and music video on consent hammers home an important message whilst also being cool AF. The video is based around the boys in a club and Jack takes his fancy to a rather gorgeous woman (who looks a little like Hazel Hayes, FYI!). As Jack tries to “pull”, he and Dean go through the importance of consent. Prepare to get this song stuck in your head forever.
Sex and Consent
A lot of YouTubers have made videos explaining sex but we loved Emma Blackery’s chatty style video. Emma’s video highlights what you should not do if you think your partner is unwilling and despite the fact we all think we’d never cross that line, things can blur our judgement.
No-one in the world talks about sex and education like Laci Green. Laci’s two year old video on consent has had over 2.5 million views and talks about why consent is not only highly attractive and hot but a fundamental right.
The Sex Advice You Wish You’d Been Given
Consent isn’t just a box to tick, it’s more than a legal term and is the pathway to great sex. In this short film devised by the students of New York University, a discussion is opened about why we don’t talk about consent enough and empowers us to understand that consent is about respecting and owning our bodies and minds.
There are a ton more amazing videos on the issue by everyone from Hank Green to Hannah Witton and we hope that something positive can come out of all the Toby Turner accusations- a deeper understanding of consent.
