Yesterday was full of anticipation and worry; as the Internet community reacted to the election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. No matter which way you voted or which candidate you wanted to win, YouTubers came out in full force with messages of positivity, hope, love and acceptance. So imagine our surprise when we saw Ben Brown make what was seemingly a very sexist “joke”.
If you don’t know who Ben is, let us be clear; we think he’s an exceptionally talented filmmaker and YouTuber, who uploads incredible videos of himself travelling around the globe and educating his audience. Clearly made in bad judgement, the “joke” was in reference to a comment made by Donald Trump; where he claimed he could essentially do anything he wanted to women.
With tensions so high yesterday, the reaction from followers and onlookers alike was mixed; but most were incensed at the casual sexual assault reference. But we were even more suprised when none other than Alfie Deyes called out Ben; instantly becoming our hero.
While it may seem like a small gesture, Alfie is an example to all of us as we face uncertain times. As Hillary Clinton channeled in her speech, it’s important we fight for what we believe is right; and calling someone out on Twitter, even your friends, is a step to help make the world a more positive place.
Since the first Tweet, Ben has clarified that he was joking, as he has “nothing else”; but cited the reaction to Brexit as a justification for the “savagery”.
Hopefully Ben will understand the severity of his comments a little more; and huge props to Alfie for calling it out.
