Can y’all remember way back in the summer of 2014 when celebrities were dumping ice cold buckets of water over their heads for the sake of charity? You may remember it being called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but what it represented was an amazing global effort to raise money for a currently incurable disease… and new research proves that it worked!
During the height of i’s viral popularity, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was widely considered as “slacktivism”, otherwise known as “actions performed via the Internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement”. Even Time Magazine threw in their two cents by saying that the challenge was “problematic in almost every way”, but thanks to the whooping $100 million raised in a 30-day window, researchers have now made a breakthrough.
More than 80 researchers in 11 countries were funded thanks to the selfless work of thousands of celebrities, YouTubers and everyday folk trying to do their part for charity. The breakthrough, which aims to cure a neurological disease that causes muscle function to deteriorate, will hopefully lead to new treatment possibilities in the future after a new gene associated with the disorder was discovered.
The vice president of the ALS Association himself said that “it’s very exciting because it shows everyone who contributed to the Ice Bucket Challenge that their donation had an impact on research”. During that month in 2014, some of the most popular challenge uploads came from the likes of VanossGaming, The Fine Bros, GloZell, Miranda Sings and even KSI – so we can now say a huge thanks to the YouTube community for spreading the word and helping out with discovering a cure.
