If there was a prize for the most worthy and amazing campaign launched by a YouTuber this week, we’d award it to Anna Akana. She’s just been announced as the new Rebel With A Cause in partnership with renowned camera brand Canon – a campaign that’s been going strong since the 90s. Her cause of choice is the prevention of suicide and bullying. We think the topic is perfect.
Launching in September 2016, Anna will be featured in a video that speaks to young people, inviting them to unite against bullying culture. The campaign will also go further into the mental health field, arming YouTube fans all over the world with the information they need to raise awareness about suicide, why it happens and how to stop it.
Both topics are extremely important and personal to Anna. At 13 years old Anna’s sister, a victim of bullying, committed suicide. Anna said in a statement, “the cause I’m advocating is one that hits home for me. I’m very passionate about creating awareness and effecting change however I can.”

The campaign celebrates 25 years of Canon’s first EOS Rebel camera – a Canon model used by plenty of our favourite vloggers. Rebel With A Cause has been running since 1990, making Anna the new personality fronting a historical creative campaign. Previous ambassadors for the campaign have included professional daredevil Nik Wallenda, whose cause revolved around helping elderly citizens from an OAP home in Florida tick activities off their bucket list. These activities included feats such as speeding a car around a race track, and taking to a fighter jet to perform loop-the-loops in the sky. Both high-speed machines were driven by pensioners who’d dreamt to perform these once-in-a-lifetime stunts their whole lives.
