After months of teasing and even a special sneak preview of his newest creation at the YouTube Space in London last month, Bertie Gilbert has finally unveiled his newest short movie, Let It Be. Starring himself, Dodie Clark, Savannah Brown and Jack Howard, Bertie presents a beautifully filmed and artistically presented story of what happens when a troubled relationship comes face-to-face with Death itself.
Set in modern day London, Savannah Brown plays the “physical manifestation of the Grim Reaper” who’s has a desperate need to experience life and everything that comes with it – but most importantly, drinking wine and listening to The Beatles. During her woes, she meets Martha (Dodie) and Car (Bertie), a couple struggling with their complicated relationship but are unwilling to talk it out like adults. Over the next 20 minutes, an existential narrative unfolds with twists and turns you could never have predicted. Pop it in your ‘Watch Later’ playlist, as you’re not going to want to miss this.
Over his entire Internet career, Bertie has written and directed seven short films and has even gathered attention and praise from professional directors such as Ron Howard. On his channel you can see some of Bertie’s previous films, such as Blue Sushi and Rocks That Bleed, but his most recent work of art is fast gathering a lot of praise and love from a variety of YouTubers on Twitter.
Standout performances from the short movie come from Savannah and Dodie who absolutely shine as actresses in scenes together. From Savannah’s quirky portrayal of Death to Dodie’s subtle performance of an emotionally scarred young woman, the acting across the whole short movie is a true testimony to how professional and talented YouTube creators are. These are people who don’t just upload vlogs or make-up hauls, they have unbridled creativity and skills that deserve to be recognised beyond their respective YouTube channels. So please, give Let It Be a watch and share the love for everyone involved!
