Gender and sexuality promises to be a massive talking point in 2016. Thanks to YouTubers such as Hannah Witton and Laci Green who continue to post fantastically informative videos that open up the conversation about sex, YouTube is becoming an important hub when it comes to finding oneself. Thanks to the community of acceptance growing louder and prouder online, we now have another YouTuber to add to our growing list of LGBTQA+ advocates now that Brendan Jordan has come out as transgender.
During a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s ‘Time To Thrive’ conference, Brendan was able to step up to the microphone and talk more about his experiences as a teenager growing to love his sexual identify – but most importantly how it doesn’t concern him that his sexual orientation is anything but stable. Following the speech, Brendan then took to twitter to confirm his identity as gender fluid, a term that falls under the transgender umbrella.
Brendan’s speech at the convention was truly moving and is something that everybody needs to hear regardless of their beliefs about sexual identity. Instead of shying away from his expectations as a high-schooler, he embodies the type of confidence and trust in finding himself that teenagers across the world need to learn from.
“Like most teenagers, I’m still figuring it out. I’m starting to identify as one, or as part, of the trans community. I can’t really label it, because, you know, some days my more feminine side comes out – the ‘she’. Some other days I don’t feel like putting on my fabulous mask, and the ‘he’ comes out, and I’m totally OK with that. And I don’t know who I am, or where I will be going in the future, who I will be 10 years from now but I’m still a teenager. I just like the limitless feeling of it, and I’m perfectly fine with who I am now. I just identify with both genders, so I go by the pronouns he or she and it’s just what I’m happy with.”
As one of our YouTubers to watch in 2016, we’re thrilled to see Brendan Jordan live up to his influential role within the LGBTQA+ community following his modelling debut with American Apparel and their non-gender-conforming clothes line and well as his participation in Miley Cyrus’ Happy Hippie Foundation. It’s been a crazy couple of years for Brendan since he was filmed voguing in the background of a news broadcast in his home town, leading him to become a viral success overnight. As we predict, 2016 will be huge for the social media star.
