The Presidential election race is getting closer to its nail-biting end; and we’ve already seen a lot of YouTubers speak up about how important it is to vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. But few have been as passionate about it as Casey Neistat.
In his own “endorsement” video, Casey breaks down why he is voting for Hillary; admitting he’s “entirely aware of all the criticism against her”, but still believes she is the most qualified candidate for the job. But he then goes one step further; and challenges all other YouTubers supporting Hilary to make their own endorsements on their channel.
“If your favourite YouTuber says things like ‘I don’t like to talk politics’, call them out,” challenges Casey. “Sitting on the sidelines this time around is not okay”.
“If [Trump] gets elected, and you stood back with your arms folded and didn’t speak out against him, it makes you complicit.”
It’s an impassioned and well-intentioned call to action, and no doubt Casey means well; but some creators aren’t loving his approach of sending their audiences after them. After being hounded by his own subscribers (and flaring up his anxiety disorder as a result), vlogger and YouTube commentator Boogie2988 responded to Casey’s video with a different angle.
“A lot of people can be very very negative when you share your opinion on YouTube,” admits Boogie. “With the new medication I’m on, I cannot handle that kind of negative criticism.”
“Casey has put me into a position where even though I’ve chosen not to talk about it to avoid that negative response, I am now getting it anyway because people are taking his challenge.”
Boogie’s case is a more extreme version of other people’s stance, but a lot of people probably share his fears of being hammered with negativity. But do you think Casey is right in believing they should stand up and speak out regardless? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
