*cough* They’re really not.

For some reason, the BBC published an article yesterday in which an “analyst” has figured out that “Internet influencers” earn “an average of $187,500 (£143,000) for each sponsored video”. As you can imagine, once this article hit the Internet, these “YouTube celebrities” had something to say… because they definitely were not earning that ludicrous amount of money.

Whilst some of the funniest comments on the topic came from Luke Cutforth and his confusion as to why Kim Kardashian was a “YouTube celebrity”, it looks like the rest of the YouTube community couldn’t get over the sheer amount of ridiculous claims the analyst was making. It didn’t just focus on sponsored YouTube content, as the analytics company also stated that creators “with a following of three to seven million people could also make $75,000 on average for a promotional post on Instagram”.


The BBC article went on to explain that “celebrities and their agents have in recent years found lucrative opportunities to endorse goods and services across social media and video websites”, which somehow gives off the impression that Internet creators are just finding ways to milking their brand for money – which we all know isn’t the case. But, apparently, a “native advert on Twitter” could earn someone a tasty sum of $30,000.

Thankfully, following its publication, creators have spoke out about the claims, with the vast majority pointing out that “$187,000” is an extraordinary amount of money that no one would earn “unless you’re ENORMOUS”.
