And like any human being with eyes to see and a brain to think, you likely thought the film – much like its protagonist – seemed kind of ‘meh’.

But why exactly has the Emoji Movie earned so much scorn and mockery (aside from its inherently terrible premise)? Well, it’s likely due to the fact that you’ve seen it all before – and not in the cynical, world-weary ‘I’ve seen it all’ kind of way – we mean you’ve literally seen it all before, in a smattering of other movies. That may be the key to the trailer’s, shall we say, ‘mixed’ reception:

Some alleged thefts are a little more tenuous than others, but there’s no denying that the makers of TEM have definitely seen ‘Inside Out’ and ‘The Lego Movie’.
