If you’ve been on Twitter over the last 48 hours, you may have noticed people have started using the blue globe emoji (🌐) at the end of their profile name. If you aren’t a part of #TeamInternet already, then you might be wondering where this new trend has come from, but don’t worry – we’re here to help you out. But first we need to take you on a kinda strange journey…
Things all started when PewDiePie decided to unverify himself from Twitter, citing in a video that it was “the real notification from now”. After looking through all the verified accounts on Twitter that follow over 500k people purely to get followers back, Felix had had enough of people trying to use the tick as “a status system”, so he took himself out of the equation entirely, because apparently you have the option to do that.
Obviously, if this was any other person on Twitter, the ripple effects would not have been so great, but because PewDiePie changed his branding and claimed that “unverified is the new verified”, all of his fans followed suit. Within seconds, the Bro Army were replacing words and emoji’s in their Twitter names to make sure they identified with PewDiePie and his rebellion against Twitter’s popularity contest.
Creators such as Emma Blackery, Kwebbelkop and Colliscool also joined in with the “globe fam” fun meaning that the use of the globe emoji spread much farther afield than Felix’s audience. So if someone asks you why you’re repping that 🌐 emoji on Twitter, now you can give them all the facts!
Other strange things have been happened in regards to PewDiePie and his social media, so if you want to read more about his dark ISIS joke and why he got suspended from Twitter temporarily, then make sure you click the clicks above! But if you want to represent that 🌐 emoji yourself, simply log onto Twitter, head to your profile page and click the button “Edit Profile”. Your name, bio and profile picture box will now have the freedom to edit and change, so simply pop the new emoji next to your name and BOOM – you’re part of the Globe Fam!
