Jack Howard has found himself in the middle of a Twitter storm after a tweet about director Woody Allen. Jack was on Twitter defending Jennifer Lawrence when he decided to make a point about separating an artist from their art, citing Woody Allen as an example. Users took issue with the phrasing of his words. In the now-deleted tweet, he said that greatly enjoyed Allen’s work, but did not agree with his ‘lifestyle’.
Allen has long been the subject of allegations that he sexually abused his own daughter (although he has never been convicted of any offences). Users interpreted Jack’s words as meaning that he felt alleged abuse was a ‘lifestyle’. This promoted a firey backlash from users who felt that he was downplaying the seriousness of sexual abuse.
Jack countered by saying that he was not referring to the allegations but was in fact referring to Allen’s marriage to Soon-Yi Previn. He stopped short of criticising Allen, saying that the abuse “wasn’t proved. It’s a grey area.”
