YouTuber Jeffree Star has announced that all the money he would make from his Jouer Cosmetics affiliate links will instead be given directly to ‘The Los Angeles LGBT Center’. Affiliate links are links to products, which creators and influencers often share under their videos, which give the creator a small bit of profit every time a viewer clicks on it. Understandably, they have proven controversial, with viewers questioning if YouTubers are recommending a product because they actually like it, or because they want affiliate clicks.
According to their official website, The Los Angeles LGBT Center has, “since 1969 … cared for, championed, and celebrated LGBT individuals and families in Los Angeles and beyond”. They offer “programs, services, and global advocacy that span four broad categories: Health, Social Services and Housing, Culture and Education, Leadership and Advocacy.”
In a video from May, Jeffree stated that he did not like to use affiliate links, because he wanted his audience to know for sure that he was talking honestly about the products he used in videos, and wasn’t being swayed by affiliate revenue. This new scheme keeps this mentality intact, as he will see none of the money that is made himself, and so is able to maintain the non-biased attitude he holds dear.
We think it’s awesome that Jeffree has taken this selfless step to use his influence to help a worthy cause, and we hope that other YouTubers and influencers follow his example.
