If you’ve been living under a rock this week, you may have missed the news that controversial mogul Kim Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint in her hotel room in Paris. And as always, as soon as the internet got wind of the story, it was immediately divided; between a little concern and sympathy, and a lot of trolling.
It seems as though Kim K can never catch a break; and better writers than me have written at length about the innate misogyny and desensitised contempt that seems to fuel that rage. But if you need somebody to sum it up in video form, look no further than Sabrina “NerdyAndQuirky” Cruz’s latest vlog.
Sabrina manages to break down in four and a half minutes what many people have failed to address in themselves; the idea that so many awful things are happening in the world at any given point right now, that a lot of us have given up our empathy.
“We have become desensitised and hyper-aware at the same time,” admits Sabrina, commenting on the nature of the internet. “Making it so, so hard to care about things with the same genuinity [sic] as if it was happening for the first time.”
“Is it really that hard to acknowledge that a person, famous or otherwise, getting robbed sucks?”
It’s an important conversation to have; not just in regards to Kim K’s latest harrowing experience, but also in reaction to every piece of bad news we as a collective have to deal with daily.
