When you’re part of such a supportive and understanding community, it’s hard to believe that anyone, anywhere, still discriminates against individuals for simply being who they are. Yet back in June, after the mass shooting in a gay club in Orlando, it was made clear that there is still a whole lot more work to be done to ensure equality for the LGBTQ+ community – and we still have a long way to go.
Yesterday (Tuesday 9th August), YouTube star and LGBTQ+ icon, Gigi Gorgeous, was detained at Dubai International Airport for being a transgender woman. The YouTuber, who is most known for bravely documenting and sharing her transition with the rest of the world, posted an emotional Instagram in the early hours of this morning (BST) explaining to her followers what had actually happened.
The post saw her embracing her friend, Nats Getty, who came to her rescue after she was detained for “over five hours”. Gigi described the incident as “one of the scariest moments of (her) life” and said that she is glad to be heading somewhere “much more accepting”. However, even though Gigi is now “safe and sound”, it is considered illegal to be transgenderin Dubai and the ‘crime’ can see up to a years jail sentence.
The 24 year old model, who was previously known as Gregory Lazzarato, changed her passport to ‘Gigi Loren’ after she transitioned. However, according to TMZ, the airport police have said that her passport still describes Gigi as a male and that is why she wasn’t allowed to enter the country. Gigi has denied this.
The YouTube star has stated that this incident “further proves the needs for change” and we hope that one day this kind of discrimination will no longer exist.
