TBH, we want Undertale as a gift.

In 2016, the Pope is doing his best to get down with the kids and become a bit more #relatable. So earlier on this year, he met up with a group of YouTube creators and influencers from across the globe to explore how the Internet brings people together – and apparently at these events it’s customary to give him a gift. It’s for this exact reason that the popular YouTuber behind the Game Theorist channel gave Pope Francis his very own copy of Undertale.

In a 16-minute video recently uploaded to his main channel, MatPat goes into more detail about why he decided to give the Pope such a strange choice in gift. He starts off by pointing out the idea behind these customary Pope gifts is that they’re supposed to represent the individual or country that they originate from. But Mat felt that instead of handing over stereotypical American items such as “an eagle” or a “machine gun”, he wanted to choose something that represents his own “life, career and culture” – video games!

Later on in the video, Mat talks more seriously about Undertale and why he chose that particular video game over others; “I gave the Pope this game because it speaks his language. This year is his self-proclaimed year of mercy for the Catholic church, a period of celebrating forgiveness and compassion when one could otherwise choose to harm a person. And what’s the recurring theme throughout Undertale? Mercy”. Do you agree with this metaphor?

Not only does Mat believe that Undertale’s central theme of friendship and acceptance is a message that needs to be spread across the world, but that it is “the single best representative of where we are as a community today” – that is, the video game “nerd” community. Whilst he has been criticised for giving the Pope a game with such a painfully enthusiastic fanbase, we’re too keen to find out if the Pope has had a go on the game yet, especially when politicians such as President Obama have been given games in the past, such as The Witcher 2, and said it “wasn’t really” for him.

The most prominent idea behind Mat’s choice was that if he “was going to be a representative of any culture, it was going to be of this culture. The Internet culture. And more specifically, of gamers”. With video games being widely promoted in the mainstream media as being “too violent” or that they “turn kids into killers”, we 100% endorse Matt’s need to take a real video game to the Pope’s hands and show him what this millennial culture is all out.
