We have the sad news today of sharing with you that Pedals, the Internet beloved black bear known for walking on his hind two legs, has been killed. Near Rockaway, New Jersey, a grand total of 562 bears were shot during the states first sanctioned bow and arrow hunt in four decades, and unfortunately one of the victims of this massacre was everyone’s favourite viral upright bear.
Pedals first started making a name for himself on the Internet back in 2014 when residents filmed and uploaded evidence of his bipedal roaming about their streets to YouTube. It’s thought that Pedals preferred this mode of travel because he suffered from paw injuries, which unfortunately came to be one of the identifying factors when a hunter killed him and took his body in to a weigh station to be certified as a kill. You can see one of his most popular sightings below, which has racked up millions of views:
In addition to his paw injuries, the dead bear is rumoured to have been 333lb and bared similar markings to that of Pedals, prompting the state of New Jersey to declare their beloved animal dead. Angi Metler, the director of the Bear Education and Resource Program spoke kindly of Pedals after the news broke of his death: “The hunters were gunning for him. It’s disturbing that someone would go and do this. If you don’t get upset about this, there’s something wrong with you”.
She also spoke more about her want to keep Pedals safe from hunters such as the ones who killed him: “We wanted Pedals to go to a sanctuary to live the rest of his life without the threat of a hunt looming over him because someone wanted to pop him off because he was an Internet sensation”. Rest in peace Pedals.
