Unfortunately in todays society, it’s all about how you look, and our appearances are being judged more than ever before. This judgment mixed with the endless possibilities of technology now makes it incredibly easy for people to change the way they are seen online. It is not news that a lot of mainstream media use Photoshop to ‘tweak’ their images, but now these misleading pictures have been appearing in our Instagram feeds without us even realising – thanks to an app that allows you to edit the way you look in minutes.
One YouTuber that is speaking out about this growing problem is Amelia Goodhead, who vlogs on the channel xameliax. She recently uploaded a before and after picture on her Instagram which her followers assumed was a weight loss post. Instead, this side by side image was actually to show the effects of an app called FaceTune, which allows anyone to change absolutely anything about their body to conform to this generations idea of ‘normal’.
Amelia followed this Instagram post by filming a five minute long video titled ‘The TRUTH Behind ‘The Perfect'” in which she showed the process of editing her bikini bod to make her stomach flatter and her thighs smaller. The lifestyle vlogger explains in the video how it can sometimes be disheartening to see these ‘perfect’ posts whilst scrolling through your Instagram feed. She then went on to remind us that these images could have been tweaked just as easily as she had edited her Instagram post which took her just two minutes.
After showing us how little effort it took to completely change her appearance, Amelia went on to explain the main purpose of her video which was her #JustAsIAm campaign. The campaign has seen Amelia ask girls from all over the world to upload an unedited image of themselves and write one thing that they love about the way they look. This movement has already been picked up by the mainstream media and Amelia has been applauded by the likes of the Huffington Post, the Daily Mail and Cosmo. People on Twitter have also continued to share their love for Amelia who has successfully hit out at these unfair beauty standards.
We’re so proud of Amelia for addressing such an important issue. Let us know what you think in the comments.
