So the tricky thing about being an internet personality is how much your name matters. Because how do you deal with sharing your name with with someone… awful? Unfortunately, this is something trans vlogger Quinby Stewart has had to face, with the rise of notorious alt-right figurehead, Milo Yiannopoulos.
Quinby has changed their name from “Milo” to distance themselves from the former Breitbart editor.
Yiannopoulos, usually referred to as just “MILO” in parts of the internet, is known for spreading hate speech and targeting transgender people; so it’s not really any surprise that Quinby wouldn’t want to associate with that. He breaks this down in a video from March, explaining that he chose the name while still closeted; and hadn’t really tried it out with people to see if it was the “right choice”.
Watch Quinby’s video explaining the name change below.
Quinby was featured on Breitbart after admitting his motivation for changing the name; where as you can imagine the reaction was less than favourable. Not one to be dissuaded though, Quinby’s just laughing it off.
There’s a lot to be said about allowing internet trolls influence how you present yourself online; but there is even more to be said about doing whatever it takes to make yourself feel secure when figuring out your identity. So props to Quinby for making a pretty big decision.
