2016's Most Retweeted Tweet Is From A YouTuber, But It Makes No Sense
9 December 2016, 11:15
It's the end of the year, so companies like Google, YouTube and even Twitter are starting to release data about their most popular interactions. We've already revealed the most popular games on YouTube in 2016, and who the most popular YouTubers were on Tumblr this year, but it looks like YouTubers also took over Twitter with the most retweeted tweet of 2016! Shame it makes no sense though...
The tweet, which was posted by the Spanish gaming YouTuber ElrubiusOMG, simply says "LIMONADA" with the Easter Island emoji - and can literally just be translated to say "LEMONADE". There seems to be very little reason as to why this one particular word and emoji were used in partnership and they seemingly have nothing in common, but apparently there was a method behind the madness!

And if you're wondering how this single tweet was able to sky-rocket itself into global success, then we have something for you right here. You see, Elrubius announced that he was doing a giveaway if his one-word tweet got retweeted as many times as physically possible... in a video posted to his YouTube channel. A channel known as the 4th most popular in the entire world with a current subscriber count of over 21 million. Yeah, that's how it went so crazy.
Elrubius's tweet was so popular in fact, with a staggering 1.4 million retweets, that it beat other influential figures such as Harry Styles and Hillary Clinton off the top spot. And if your tweet about lemonade can gain more public attention than the surprise announcement of a One Direction baby, then you freaking deserve all the fizzy lemon juice in the world. What a year this has been.
So congrats to ElrubiusOMG and his hugely popular tweet - think you can make it back into the top ten next year with something about Pepsi?
