It’s now become tradition for YouTubers such as Nash Grier and Shane Dawson to shade the Teen Choice Awards on Twitter for being “rigged” and “fake” – and yeah, it’s happening again in 2016. In a series of salty tweets aimed towards the celebrity awards show, Shane Dawson and Colleen Evans are speaking out about their “disgust” towards the TCA’s and why their fellow YouTubers should boycott them entirely.
Shane’s beef with the Teen Choice Awards was made clear last year when it was revealed that YouTubers were told before the voting was closed that they had won the award, and that producers picked winners based purely on their availability. So, back in time for this years TCA voting, Shane tweeted out this cup of boiling tea; “Dear YouTubers, please STOP promoting the Teen Choice Awards. They’re rigged and they just want to use ur audience for traffic. Kthanks”.
After calling out the award ceremony for being “rigged”, Shane goes on to point out that “when a YouTuber wins they don’t even get a surfboard haha trust me, I’m still waiting on mine. It’s ‘in the mail’ for 6 YEARS”. He does however make his hatred very clearly pointed at the TCA’s by ending his rant with the following statement; “this is NO shade to YouTubers. It’s ALL SHADE to the awards haha” – what do you think?
But Shane’s rage didn’t stop there. The very next day, the official TCA Twitter account posted one of the most insensitive and thoughtless tweets we’ve ever seen, which Shane picked up on as well. In their tweet, they asked fans to “Retweet to vote in memory of @TheRealGrimmie for #ChoiceMusicWebStar”, completely oblivious to how “disgusting” using Christina’s image to promote their award ceremony was. You can see Shane’s response below.
Over in the Evans-Ballinger camp, Colleen backed up Shane Dawson’s claim that he had never received a surfboard by replying to a fan on Twitter who dragged her into the debate; “Apparently YouTubers don’t get the trophies. They just want our fans to promote the show & not give us anything if we win”. Whilst other YouTubers such as Bethany Mota and Tyler Oakley actually HAVE their awards, it has brought up fan speculation that winners do not get to take home the coveted surfboard unless they’re actually present to the Teen Choice Awards show.
We can neither confirm or deny this idea, but we would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
