Last night, the annual Teen Choice Awards took place with hundreds of gorgeous celebrities and very excited fans all buzzing over who the winners of 2016 would be. However, even though Christina Grimmie was awarded her very first TCA award, it was neither aired on TV, mentioned on social media or accompanied with an emotional tribute/memorial. She wasn’t acknowledged the entire evening.
We’ll try to explain the absolute horror of this situation a little bit more clearly. Back in early July, the official Teen Choice Awards Twitter account asked their fans to retweet and vote for Christina to win #ChoiceMusicWebStar. Not only did YouTubers such as Shane Dawson find it exploitative to use her image to promote their show, but fans protested that she had only been recognised because of her ill fate, and not her talent.
Now we fast forward to Sunday the 31st of July, and the night of the Teen Choice Awards. With Pretty Little Liars winning their 7th year in a row, and both the Dolan Twins and Lilly Singh bagging iconic Web Star awards, there was never any mention of the #ChoiceMusicWebStar category until after the evening was wrapped up. You see, Christina’s much deserved win was buried in a press statement that was released AFTER the ceremony.
For a show that prides itself on honouring every single area of the entertainment industry, from social media stars to Justin-flipping-Timberlake’s decade long career, fans were appalled to see that Christina’s talent was not only ignored, but removed entirely from their glamorous evening. What makes this situation even more shocking is that Jessica Alba actually presented a moving tribute to gun crime victims in America using the hashtag #StopTheViolence – but Christina wasn’t mentioned once!
Thankfully, our saviour Shane Dawson continued to have his say on the Teen Choice Awards as he took to Twitter to drag them for another year, because why should 2016 be any different – “BTW, I’m glad the TCA’s didn’t do a memorial for Christina Grimmie. I don’t want her beautiful face anywhere near that trash show… K, rant over. But next year if I see any YouTubers asking for votes on Twitter for this fake ass show imma snatch some damn wigs”. YOU TELL ‘EM SHANE.
