The Internet is often the first place we turn to if we have a question; we all admit to Googling our cold symptoms or asking Siri if it’s OK to reheat left over takeaway. But often, when you’re going through something a lot more serious than warming up cold chinese food, it’s so easy to find strength in YouTube and connect with people who are going through exactly the same as you.
Someone who knows this all too well is thirteen year old, Macey Wright, who has decided to vlog her entire heart transplant experience in the hope that she can help a few others along the way. The teenager from Utah was born with a serious heart condition that required her to have open heart surgery just two years ago. However, after a recent visit with her cardiologist, she has been told that undergoing a heart transplant will be the only way to cure her heart disease.
The young vlogger recently appeared on the popular American talk show, Good4Utah, with her mum to tell us all about her experience so far and how the disease has effected her life. In the interview, Macey’s mum explains to us that 1 in 100 babies will be born with a heart defect and their family are not letting “fear get to them” when it comes to Macey’s transplant.
Following in the footsteps of many other YouTubers, such as Troye Sivan and Tanya Burr, Macey has decided to use her channel to raise awareness for something that is extremely important to her; registering as an organ donor. In her second vlog update she explains how becoming an organ donor “saves so many lives” and that it’s just a “huge thing to bring awareness to”. Her aim is to update us all as much as she can on her channel, which has already seen vlogs from doctors appointments and scans, and Macey plans on letting her subscribers know about all of the amazing events and fundraisers she’s got going on.
Let us know what you think about Macey’s story in the comments and in the meantime, check out our latest instalment of SLAY or NAY to catch up with all of our YouTube news.
