The details have emerged and we’re horrified.

VidCon 2016 has seemed like one of the happiest, most fun experiences for all who attended. Despite the fact that the community has been mourning the loss of Christina Grimmie and reacting to the Orlando shootings, we’ve seen more positivity than ever to make a change and celebrate YouTube’s diverse, intelligent community of fans and creators alike. However, for Calum McSwiggan, his trip to California ended on the worst note possible after the YouTuber was violently beaten by a gang during a night out.

Reports of the horrific incident came to light when Melanie Murphy took to Snapchat to update fans. Melanie, who had been on a night out with Calum, had expressed her concern and took to Twitter to reassure fans she’d update them once she knew more. Callum and Melanie were joined by Riyadh K and Doug Armstrong and headed out to a gay club to celebrate the end of VidCon. Indeed, photos on social media showed the group getting ready and feeling increasingly excited to let their hair down after a few manic days.

However, according to an Instagram update by Calum, things took a turn for the worse when the LGBT+ Positivity YouTuber was seperated from his group in the club:

“Last night was the worst night of my life and I’m really struggling to find the words to talk about it. After one of the most wonderful weekends at VidCon we went out to a gay club to celebrate, and towards the end of the evening I was separated from my friends and beaten up by three guys. The authorities should have been there to help and protect me but instead they treated me like a second class citizen. With three broken teeth and six stitches in my forehead, I’ve never felt so terrified to be a gay man in the public eye. All I can do is thank my wonderful friends @riyadhk, @melaniiemurphy and @douga_ for being with me the whole way. I’d be lost without them. Right now I don’t feel that I’m in the right place to talk about this but I will be addressing this fully in the future.

Calum also posted this distressing selfie which breaks our heart,

Sadly, it turns out Calum was targeted after friend Riyadh revealed the attackers tracked Calum down:

As you can imagine, the YouTube community has come out in force and condemned this disgusting homophobic attack whilst also sending Calum their thoughts and prayers.

We’re absolutely disgusted that individuals could behave in such a barbaric way and we applaud Calum for his strength and continued positivity and eagerness to make the world a better place. We’re wishing him a speedy recovery and sending love to all his friends, family and fans.
