So it seems like a rite of passage for an artist of every medium to have an eccentric pet at some point. Salvador Dali had an anteater. Michael Jackson had a chimpanzee. But now, vlogger Charlotte Harrison has been documenting her experience hatching and raising a baby emu – that she bought as an egg on Ebay.
Charlotte bought the emu egg on Ebay for £25, and spent 47 days incubating it.
Since its hatching, she has been documenting its growth on her YouTube channel. The emu is named Kevin, despite being revealed as female later.
But in a strange turn of events that nobody could have predicted, raising an emu isn’t quite like a puppy. They aren’t illegal to own, but they have a lot of very specific needs in order to be happy and healthy. And they grow fast; bear in mind, fully-grown emus are massive.
Despite some preparation before buying the egg, Charlotte learned this the hard way.
This slightly frazzled vlog from her about how hard it is to look after an specialist animal like Kevin offers some insight into how to plan ahead.
Sadly, Charlotte and Kevin’s relationship wasn’t meant to be. Since the videos have been posted over the past few weeks, Kevin has been voluntarily handed to the RSPCA to be looked after.
At least they’ll always have the memories of Kevin. Like a 4 year-old girl being traumatised by her.
