YouTube, sneaky devils that they are, having quietly redesigned their entire website. YouTube nonchalantly dropped the unexpected bombshell that they have drastically overhauled the design of their site on their official blog, which detailed their aims for the new design: simplicity, consistency and beauty. Considering the current YouTube site design is basically universally held somewhere between disdain and outright hatred; it’s a wise move.
The site is getting a flashy new look, with long, bold cover pictures and playlists that run from one side of the screen to the other – basically they’ve made the site look more like it used to (good) and less like it does now (boxy and bad).
And then there’s dark mode
‘Dark mode’ is YouTube’s new extra-emo viewing option, which YouTube says is designed to help viewers watching at night – perfect for those of us caught up in a late-night YouTube binge (which is all of us, constantly).
How to access the new design with one click
How do you try out all this fun new nonsense? Well you’ll be pleased to know that it is ludicrously easy. All you have to do is make sure you’re logged into YouTube and then simply go to YouTube.com/new and it will give you the option to try the new design – easy! You can turn ‘Dark Theme’ on and off by clicking on your logo in the top right corner, which will open a little menu. Then just turn it on.
Can you switch back to the old design?
Yes indeed. Simply click the button at the bottom of that same menu that says ‘restore classic YouTube’ and you’ll be taken back to YouTube as it currently looks. What do you think of the new redesign, and of dark mode? Let us know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
