As 2017 whizzes by, we’re getting closer and closer to the UK’s biggest YouTube event – Summer in the City. Kicking off its third year at London’s ExCeL Centre, SitC 2017 promises, as always, to be the biggest year ever.
But as we get closer, and more creators are announced, many fans still have one question on their minds:
Yes, the event is just a few months away and Dan & Phil have yet to be announced as part of the line-up. Dan & Phil probably have one of the most passionate and vocal followings on the internet; so you can imagine that the SitC Twitter account is getting replies like the examples above… pretty much hourly.
In light of this, we thought we’d compile a handy guide to answer all your questions:
So are they going?
At the time of writing, Dan & Phil have yet to be announced for SitC. But there are still a few months until the event itself – and the duo have yet to announce any major plans that would clash with the dates. If this changes, we’ll update you here.
What will they be doing if they attend?
Like all YouTube events, there are three or four main things a creator can do – speak on a panel, host or perform on the main stage, and do meet & greets. At previous events like SitC, Dan & Phil have done a bit of all of these things; but obviously the meet & greet would be most popular. Chances are if they attend, they would be spending around 3 hours meeting fans – which would be an average of about 300 people.
Why wouldn’t they go?
There could be any number of reasons why Dan & Phil decide to miss out on this year’s SitC. Last year was the first one the two haven’t been to since the event grew in size; and this was because they were in Australia for The Amazing Tour Is Not On Fire. However, it might even be down to something as simple as them not feeling like it – YouTubers are people too, after all.
What happens if they don’t go?
Chances are if Dan & Phil do miss out on SitC, they won’t be completely absent from the event. Last year, despite their lack of presence, they managed to win a SitC award for Best Book; and appeared on the big screen of the main stage to say their thanks from Australia (6:20 in the video below).
And if you’re worried you’ll miss out on throwing your money at them, then don’t panic; because chances are they will still have a merch stall at the event run by a dedicated team.
And yes, there will probably also be life-size cardboard cutouts.
Will the event still be good without them?
Absolutely. Summer in the City has never been about any one or two YouTubers; it started as a community event, and in its growth, seems to have managed to maintain that spirit for almost ten years. There are a ton of things to do, and people to meet; and with all the YouTubers in the world that have attended and not attended the event, it’s still here.
