Everything you need to know about YouTube’s most infamous prankster

You’d have been forgiven for not knowing who Jake Paul is until this weekend; when the 20-year-old former Disney kid (more on that later) made headlines, after neighbours claimed he had turned their West Hollywood community into a “war-zone.” But with Jake now bursting into the mainstream, it’s time to get educated. Or, should we say, prepared.

So who is Jake Paul?

Jake was born in Ohio on January 17, 1997. His social media career started out on the now defunct app Vine. By the time Vine shut down, Jake had 5.3 million followers and 2 billion views.

What did Jake Paul do with Disney?

In 2016, Jake began playing the role of Dirk in Disney Channel comedy series “Bizaardvaark”, a show that’s essentially about YouTubers; but they call their platform Vuuugle. Because copyright is no joke, y’all. Jake’s character Dirk ran a fictional Vuuugle channel called “Dare Me Bro,” to which he uploaded videos of him completing various dares. So not a huge stretch, character-wise.

On 22nd July, Disney announced that Jake would be leaving Bizaardvark. The official line from Jake is that he left to focus on his personal brand – however the news came immediately after a spate of bad press, leading many to believe his IRL antics were the real reason behind his departure.

The antics in question? Oh, where to start. From attempting to crash overnight at the literal White House to setting a sofa on fire in his back garden, Jake manages to get on the nerves of most adults he comes across; so much so that his neighbours went to the press on 18th July to reveal these they were considering legal action against Jake for being such a terrible neighbour. But to his fans, it’s all mostly for the lols. He’s a “savage”, you see?.

(No, we don’t get it either.)

It sounds like Jake Paul is a bit of a dick. Is that the case?

Yes It really depends on who you ask. He’s got over eight million subscribers on YouTube, and over 1.8 million Twitter followers. And his (mostly young teenage) fans are completely obsessed. But support for Jake tends to drop off past the age of around 16. Opinions on Jake range from “infallible man god” to “overgrown child with more money than sense.” But if you think Jake’s just a meathead who accidentally stumbled upon fame and fortune, boy are you mistaken.

But is Jake Paul smart?

It seems as though he is. In a recent interview with Forbes magazine, Jake spoke about his social media company Team Dom, which boast 30 million followers and 6 billion views. “We’re focused on building brands, celebrities and business,” he explained. And with social media investment guru Gary Vaynerchuck (who’s involved with Uber, Snapchat Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr) putting his money behind Team Dom, Jake must be doing something right. Even his ridiculous YouTuber gang “Team 10” is far more than meets the eye.

Wait. Who are Team 10?

Jake Paul’s squad, “Team 10”

Team 10 is the name that Jake Paul gives his squad of friend/fellow influencers. They all live together in the same house in West Hollywood, and essentially turn every waking second of their lives into content. At the moment, the squad includes Jake, Alissa Violet, Alex Lange, AJ Mitchell, the Dobre twins, and Jake’s girlfriend Erika Costell. Erika is a perfect example of how powerful Team 10 is – within four days of joining team 10 and setting up her own YouTube page, Erika gained 2.5 million subscribers. Read more about Erika here.

Does Jake Paul have any music?

Yes. It’s a sort of quasi-trap meets after-school special called “It’s Everyday Bro”. And if that’s not enough to put you off, here’s the video:

He also has a song with his brother Logan Paul (see below), called I Love You Bro. Check it out, if you dare.

Does Jake have any famous siblings?

Yes! Jake’s older brother Logan Paul is also a huge social media influencer. He’s basically exactly the same as Jake but two years older. It’s all quite a lot to deal with.

Got your hands on our World of YouTube book yet? It’s really rather good…
