We’ve been watching Lily Pebbles and ViviannaDoesMakeUp for years- from the perma tan orange days to the beautiful lifestyle gurus they now are. So when we got the chance to grill the pair on YouTube as a career and all things beauty (of course!), we jumped at the chance.
Read on to find out how the girls have grown their channels and which products they simply can’t live without!
WTU: Hi ladies! You two seem to have less of a tween audience than a lot of YouTube beauty gurus and more of an audience your own age- how has your content changed as you’ve gotten older?
Lily: I think from the start I’ve just tried to completely be myself and so naturally I’ve attracted an audience who are a similar age to me and are interested in the same type of shops and products. It’s nice to be able to talk about the products I love to use and the places I love to visit and know that my audience are completely on a level with me.
Anna: Though I might have makeup in the [user]name, I’ve always felt like my channel and blog is just an extension of whatever I’m loving at that moment so as I’ve got older my tastes have changed to include interiors and cooking, fitness and style – so it’s been really fun in recent months to change it up a bit and discuss those as well as my current mascara crush. The majority of my audience are around the same age and therefore in the same boat so seem to be on board too. Thanks guys!
WTU: You both have really strong lifestlye sections to your blogs and channels. Any chance of a coffee table book or a Marie Kondo tidying guide?
Anna: I think I’ll be leaving this one to the Marie Kondo’s of the world. Although there are certain parts of the flat that look neat and tidy please don’t ever come round and look in my kitchen boards! Also when it comes to food I just ate a bag of Mini Eggs for lunch. Delia Smith I am not!
Lily: I’m loving making more lifestyle content at the moment and I am a HUGE fan of lifestyle coffee table books. Saying that, there’s no plans for one at the moment. I’m just enjoying making the most out of my content and continuing to push myself and try new things.
WTU: With Beauty Chat LIVE, you’re bringing the online offline- how do you think this effects the relationship between viewer and content creator?
Lily: Beauty Chat LIVE was an idea that popped up when Anna and I were discussing bringing our videos to life and moving into events, without having to do something too scripted and staged. We desperately want to meet as many people as possible but the priority for us has always been to make sure we have time to chat to everyone who comes. For us it’s more than just about a hug and a photo, we want to really get to know our viewers, find out what they do and just enjoy hanging out.
Anna: We love running these #BeautyChatLIVE sessions because they’re small and intimate so give us a chance to really get to know the people who check in with our corners of the Internet. We want everyone to feel like they’ve had their own pampering experience and go home with lots of goodies and a belly full of food and Prosecco. At the end of the night we feel like we’ve just had a nice catch-up with old friends and hopefully everyone that comes along feels the same!
WTU: Content creators are getting younger and younger with the likes of Eve Bennett having over 4 million views at just 15. How do you think this will effect the future of beauty vlogging?
Lily: I think we’re just getting older, ha! YouTube is definitely becoming more “normal” to the younger generation and I think it’s really exciting to see so many new people joining the platform. There’s so much content on there that I think it’s great that viewers can find what interests them. There’s room for everyone!
Anna: I think it will mean that the age range in audience will continue to grow and every beauty lover – be it a 15 year old or a 45 year old will have someone to watch that they feel like they can relate to. It’s the next generation of YouTubers that will have their own ‘GOSH Darling’ and ‘MAC Myth Lipstick’ moments.
WTU: Yup, we remember our “Darling” lipstick days- there are way too many pics of us with a way-too-nude lip! Speaking of beauty, what are your must-have products that you’ve discovered thanks to YouTube?
Anna: Lily got me into the Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer and it’s a fab concealer that covers blemishes and redness and anything else that needs evening out. The Estée Lauder EE Cream was another find thanks to Sandra from TTSandra. That stuff is just like glowy, ‘I’ve had eight hours of sleep’ skin, in a tube.
Lily: Oh my god, so much! The Kat Von D liquid lipsticks, the Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel, NARS Laguna. I very rarely buy a beauty product without watching a YouTube review first!
WTU: Thanks, girls! We’re off to buy the Urban Decay concealer stat!
