When John Green slyly tweeted the phrase “Turtles All the Way Down” just before VidCon kicked off, we expected to wait months before more info on a new book. Because it’s been over five years since the author and Vlogbrother released the smash hit “The Fault In Our Stars”; and old-school Nerdfighters will remember how much of a closely-guarded secret John kept that story.
So imagine our surprise when we realised that just days later, plenty of info on the plot and release is readily available; which, of course, we’re going to share with you now – and more as it comes out.
John Green’s next novel will officially be titled ‘Turtles All the Way Down’.
A big announcement push on the 22nd June included a video from John and a briefing from Penguin, the book’s publisher.
John, eager to keep the major plot points under wraps, describes the plot as “a young woman trying to solve a mystery while also trying to live with mental illness”.
Penguin, eager to give away everything, tells us the mystery is a missing billionaire, the young girl is 16 year-old protagonist Aza Holmes, and the story is about “lifelong friendship, the intimacy of an unexpected reunion, and Star Wars fan fiction”.
“While it’s definitely a made-up story, it’s also kind of a personal one,” admits John, referring to his anxiety. “Because as most of you know, I have a mental illness that at times has taken over my life.”
The stage of the book being written
Current status: Written! But presented as many loose pages on John’s floor.
Prior to the book announcement, John had been leading eagle-eyed fans on a scavenger hunt through his videos; posting clues that would grant them access to a forum called “Itsatuatara“. Tuataras are reptiles that live in New Zealand, and also reportedly feature in the new novel. The scavenger hunt has inspired a popular Discord channel known as “Tuataria”.
There has yet to be any announcements in regards to a tour or release-based events for the novel, but check back here for updates as and when they come.
The official publishing date for ‘Turtles All the Way Down’ is October 10th, 2017. It is already available for pre-order on most major bookseller’s websites; though John has urged his following where possible to buy local.
There’s no word on whether the first 100,000 copies of the novel with be signed by John, as the ‘TFIOS’ first print so famously was; but we’re edging towards “most likely definitely not”. Holy wow, were we wrong. Not only is John committing to signing once again, he’s doubling down; pledging to sign 200,000 copies of the much larger first print.
