There was a lot of wild speculation about what was happening with Marina Joyce this past week and among the somewhat reasonable concerns were some downright insane rumours. We went through and debunked some of the most dangerous rumours in a previous article, but today we thought we'd take a look at easily the silliest rumour of all: that Marina is somehow involved with the illuminati (a secret organisation at the heart of most conspiracy theories).

That prediction actually turned out to be true, because this is the internet so of course it did:


Conspiracy YouTubers leapt on the chance to produce some top quality content about how Marina is quite clearly a part of the new world order. Some Twitter users took a playful swipe at people that were taking these theories seriously:

While others simply jokingly trolled:

And some were quite clearly a joke:


It all acts a reminder that while the internet can a great source of information, social media often really can't. Probably the biggest lesson we can all take away from the Marina Joyce drama is to be more skeptical about what we read online and not to just accept something as fact simply because someone tweets it with exciting language.
