We recently published an article where we outlined how a platform called SocialBlade had done some pretty clever calculations and revealed a Top 10 list of the best Beauty YouTubers of 2016. However, what we reported was how surprising it was to see creators such as Michelle Phan and Ingrid Nilsen totally disappear from that list, and Jeffree Star suddenly appear in the top spot.
The list included a whole host of favourites such as Zoe Sugg, Tati from Glam Life Guru and Nikkie Tutorials, but the most talked about factor was the fact that topping the list of the most popular beauty vloggers was the ever controversial, Jeffree Star. The musician turned makeup artist has over 2.7 million YouTube subscribers to date and a makeup line which has sold out several times over - but is he still problematic?
However, the star isn't without controversy and our article announcing that he'd bagged the number one spot threw up a lot of debate. In the article we claimed he'd "shockingly" won and stated that it was "unfortunate"- words we still stand by. The reasoning for this, if you're not familiar, comes from Star's record for being racist and appallingly appropriating "black face". You can read the full story by clicking right here, so it therefore begs the question of whether Jeffree Star can be excused for previous behaviour.
Whilst we admit that Star has a huge amount of talent, we can't deny that behaviour like his is totally unacceptable. But where do you stand on the issue? When we posted the original article to Facebook, a huge debate ensued with two different types of supporters becoming clear - either against Jeffree Star as someone deserving to be popular, or for Jeffree having his past excused.
