This year was bad for everything except YouTube. Well, some YouTube anyway.
With the year winding down, we decided to take a look at some of the most iconic things that happened on YouTube in this strange, strange year.
In this instance, we're using the word 'iconic' to mean 'delightfully weird or funny'. More serious achievements are being recognised in our 2017 Unicorn Awards. Let me repeat that: this is a list of 'funny' iconic things. I am well aware that Markiplier raised nearly half a million dollars for Save The Children, but that's not the sort of thing this list is dealing with.
1. England is my city
Like or loathe it, it's the line that defined 2017 on YouTube. The story behind the line is also even more silly that you thought.
2. Trisha Paytas brought the hits
3. Elijah Daniel became mayor of Hell
As of today, August 30th, 2017 I am the legal mayor of Hell, Michigan. This is real. I am the mayor of Hell. pic.twitter.com/J7fuaLnFKV— LIL PHAG (@elijahdaniel) August 30, 2017
As acting mayor of Hell, Michigan I hearby ban all heterosexuals from entering our town. pic.twitter.com/uDuGWFATmS— LIL PHAG (@elijahdaniel) August 30, 2017
4. That Poppy in general
If you need something strange, confusing and truly iconic being done, you go to Poppy. The singer/YouTuber/android(?) had an incredible year of being weird as hell and hey, we dig it.
5. Jon Cozart's epic YouTuber roast
Pure fire - arguably the best thing that happened on YouTube in 2017 full stop.
6. Shane Dawson selling his underwear for thousands
Exactly the kind of absolute nonsense that makes YouTube what it is.
7. Elijah and Christine getting married in Taco Bell
Fun just seems to follow these two around.
8. Badoo revealing that there are officially 748 single men who look exactly like Dan Howell
9. A ton of iconic YouTube videos turned ten
I'm not old, YOU'RE old.

10. We got YouTubers to act out a soap opera
Look, I know we made it, but that doesn't stop it being iconic.
Keep an eye on the site where we will also been soon posting a list of the worst things that happened on YouTube this year.
