The biggest of the big
There are billions of hours of footage on YouTube, but only some videos are able to cut through the noise and get the truly massive views that we all dream about. Here's a rundown of the 10 biggest videos in YouTube history, as off 2018. We will, of course, update this list if the members should shift around, or if a new challenger enters the field. Let's take a look:
10. Bailando - Enrique Iglesias
We kick off our list with musical icon Enrique Iglesias, who snatches the number ten spot with his Spanish language hit 'Bailando'.
9. Shake It Off - Taylor Swift
Next up we have a little up-and-coming indie artist by the name of Taylor Swift. Nope, I've never heard of her either, but maybe in 2018 the media will develop some interest in her. She enters the list with her pop classic 'Shake It Off':
8. Sugar - Maroon 5
Sadly this song arrives at number 8 on our list instead of number 5, depriving me of any real fuel or incentive to make a whimsical comment here. So all I can say is that classic phrase, "here is Sugar by Maroon 5":
7. Masha and the Bear: Recipe for Disaster
The first, and only, non-music video to make the list. This is a hugely popular Russian kids video. Seeing as it is in Russia I do not speak Russian I have no idea what the video is about - so let's just say it's about... hmmm.... bees. Enjoy:
6. Sorry - Justin Bieber
All was forgiven for Justin Bieber when he dropped this worldwide smash hit back in whatever year it was that it was released (look, this isn't a music website, okay?) It's pretty wild to think that the same people who absolutely despised Bieber and dismissed his music as juvenile were the same ones getting down to this infectious anthem mere days after it came out.
5. Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars
"Uptown Funk you up, said Uptown Funk you up." - Not my words, but the words of a Mr Bruno Mars and his good friend Mark Ronson. This song is conflicting: on the one hand, it is good and pleasant to listen to. On the other hand, it gave Macklemore the idea to write his own song 'Downtown', which is comfortably the worst song of all time. So ups and downs all round.
4. Gangnam Style - Psy
The first YouTube video to hit one billion views and a smash hit in almost every country despite being almost entirely in Korean. Starting to think people might be fond of this:
3. Shape Of You - Ed Sheeran
If you were a human being with ears who was alive in the last two years, you will have heard this song, whether you wanted to or not. It was everywhere, it is still everywhere, it will be everywhere forever. There is no escaping it. The end.
2. See You Again - Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth
This musical tribute to Paul Walker was an enormous hit for both fans of the Fast and Furious franchise and the public at large, and with good reason - it's a stone cold classic:
There are two kinds of people in the world: people who know the lyrics to Despacito and people who do not know the lyrics to Despacito. But - PLOT TWIST - all of these people belong to one, larger group: people who like the song Despacito. Complicated enough? Good. Now listen to the fun song:
