Twitter needed a serious injection of humour this weekend.

This isn't the first time a celebrity has been declared 'dead' whilst they blissfully continue on with their lives, unaware of the f-anarchy that's currently happening on Twitter.

This sick trend finally made its way to one of our faves, with genuine fear growing over the weekend that Troye Sivan had left us early. This, thankfully, is not true - but it begs the question: why do people even start these sick trends?!

The trend #riptroyesivan started at 5pm GMT and continued through the night, gathering approximately 1.5k tweets per hour. We hope, as it was the first time the trend has appeared, that it will also be the last, but it goes to show how responsive the Internet can be to unconfirmed celebrity deaths.

Twitter did not take too kindly to the news of Troye's 'passing', with half of users being downright disgusted by the hoax - and the other half finding it a good opportunity for meme-age.

Amy here was particularly upset about the trend, labelling it as the same sense of humour as Undesirable No 1 himself: Sam Pepper. Note: While multiple tweets make reference to Sam starting this trend, there is no evidence for it and he cannot be blamed for this disgusting hashtag.

We gathered some more Twitter reactions to show the length and breadth of people's outrage over the weekend. But there's one last thing y'all need to know... Troye is alive, well and tweeting about Blue Neighbourhood. What a bae.
