We the Unicorns

By Liam Dryden

We're taking you all the way back to the viral video badlands of 2007!

Back in its early years, "Going Viral" used to be a lot harder to achieve on YouTube (people hadn't figured out that beauty hauls and lame street pranks were a view-bating goldmine by then). What this meant was that when a random video started to reach viral status, two things happened:

  • everyone you know saw it.
  • It would be quoted, referenced and shared for months.

We might not have realised it, but some of the earlier, weirder, less formulaic viral videos have shaped the humour of the internet as we know it. As part of a new weekly #TBT, we want to look back on just a few of the weird videos that helped make YouTube (and the whole internet), the weird, amazing place it is today!

Liam Kyle Sullivan - "Shoes"

Try this experiment: Next time someone mentions shoes around you, do the"Ohmygod, shoes" voice of Sullivan's character Kelly and watch as the nostalgia smacks them all the way back to early 2007. With almost 57 million views, this video has had some serious staying power in the internet archives!

Zombie Kid Likes Turtles

Even clips from the news can reach immortality, because internet. Who knows where this kid is today? Is he still wearing zombie makeup? Is he still confusing local reporters? Has a viral video ever been so random? All we know for sure is one thing: he like turtles.

Potter Puppet Pals: The Mysterious Ticking Noise

Neil Cicierega is one of the unsung cornerstones of the entire weird internet; believe it or not, "Potter Puppet Pals" might be one of the most normal things he and his sister Emmy have ever worked on. And this infuriatingly catchy video from 2007 has reached legendary status.
