Yuya is one of the most popular YouTubers in the world, but have you heard of her? If not, then get yo' self informed with our handy guide
Mariand Castrejon Castańeda aka 'Yuya' is one of the most popular online creators in the world, so why haven't you heard of her? Well it's likely due to the fact she is Mexican and all her videos are in Spanish.
As an English-speaking person, you can sometimes fall into the misapprehension that all of the world's biggest YouTubers speak English as a first language, but with other languages being so widespread (Spanish being spoken by over 400 million people worldwide, and counting), this is often not the case.
Who is Yuya?
Yuya is a beauty vlogger who has a channel called lady116makeup. This channel was the 21st most subscribed channel in the world as of July 2017. She is 24 years old and the name 'Yuya' is a nickname she has had since childhood that arose from some playful teasing. She joined YouTube at 16 and quickly became one of the platform's fastest rising stars. She is currently dating fellow Spanish-language YouTuber Beto Pasillas.
What does she do?
Yuya makes videos that feature everything from beauty tips, to life hacks to personal vlogs. Her success on YouTube has lead to her becoming an influential figure in her own right. In March 2016, she was also one of seven female YouTube creators who was part of United Nations' 'Sustainable Development Action Campaign'. This campaign aims to "achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls"
Extra fun facts
Yuya loves animals and, much like Zoe Sugg, she has a younger brother that helped to become a successful YouTuber in his own right. Her star sign is Pisces. Her real name, Mariand, is actually a portmanteau of the first names of her parents: Maribel and Andres. Maribel + Andres = Mariand, geddit? She is an animal lover and she currently has a whopping 19 million YouTube subscribers, meaning she is more subscribed than Dan Howell, Tyler Oakley or even Zoella.
