Twitter just broke the news

It's official: Vine is being shut down 'within months' according to Twitter, the company that owns it. In a statement announcing the move, Twitter stated that "since 2013, millions of people have turned to Vine to laugh at loops and see creativity unfold. Today, we are sharing the news that in the coming months we’ll be discontinuing the mobile app."

Their statement says that they will keep the Vine website online but the app will be shut down in 'months'. This will effectively kill the service, as the app is the only way to create new vines. The vines you have already made will live on forever on the vine website, which will presumably become a sort of weird pop culture time capsule, but new vines? No chance.
