This award is v. important!
Back again for 2016, the British LGBT Awards are an annual celebration of the celebrities and companies working tirelessly hard to promote LGBT visibility and rights. For the first time since it's launch two years ago, the award ceremony has nominated three of our favourite YouTubers!
Spread over two categories, you can now start voting for one of your favourite LGBT YouTubers to win one of the most prestigious Pride awards in the world. In the category for "Celebrity Rising Star", amongst Olly Alexander and Rebecca Root, you can vote for the drunken chef Hannah Hart and the most visible lesbian couple on YouTube, Rose and Rosie! The second category is for the "Celebrity Straight Ally of the Year", where we have Miss Zoe Sugg competing against Eddie Redmayne and Holly Willoughby!
Founder of the LGBT Awards, Sarah Garrett, expressed how vital the awards are in highlighting acceptance within the community; “The 2016 shortlist showcases a huge range of LGBT celebrities and famous straight allies who are doing wonderful things for and on behalf of the LGBT community”.
Whilst no YouTubers were nominated last year, perhaps their sudden inclusion will be mean big for the LGBT community and their visibility on the platform. In the past 12 months alone, YouTube has been used multiple times to help teens speak out about their issues or even come out with their sexuality. However, you can read here our thoughts about Zoella being nominated in the most redundant category - "Celebrity Straight Ally".
The event, labelled the British "gay event" of the year by director and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, will be hosted at London's Grand Connaught Rooms on the 13th of May.
