Did you watch the trailer for The Emoji Movie and think 'hmm, this seems familiar?'

Like any red-blooded masochistic internet user, you undoubtedly couldn't resist sitting down to watch the trailer for the 'Emoji Movie' when it came lolling onto the scene. And like any human being with eyes to see and a brain to think, you likely thought the film -  much like its protagonist - seemed kind of 'meh'.

Here's the original, unedited trailer, if you want to refamilarise yourself with the tragic magic:

But why exactly has the Emoji Movie earned so much scorn and mockery (aside from its inherently terrible premise)? Well, it's likely due to the fact that you've seen it all before - and not in the cynical, world-weary 'I've seen it all' kind of way - we mean you've literally seen it all before, in a smattering of other movies. That may be the key to the trailer's, shall we say, 'mixed' reception:

YouTube user JoshBMemes has edited together a version of the trailer that pauses to show you the parts of other movies The Emoji Movie allegedly decided to borrow some ideas from and, well, it's pretty exhaustive. Some alleged thefts are a little more tenuous than others, but there's no denying that the makers of TEM have definitely seen 'Inside Out' and 'The Lego Movie'. Take a look at the video for yourself here:

The video has amassed over one million views in just two months, so it's safe to say this hot take is resonating with people. But what do you think? Do you think The Emoji Movie copied other movies? Do you think it even matters? Will you just watch it anyway for the pure memery of it all? Let us know in the comments below, or on our Facebook page.
