Here's how to appear offline on Instagram, using the platform's Activity Status settings to turn off that annoying little green dot.

From the heady days of MSN messenger, the little green dot on social media platforms has been a curse, giving friends and followers a literal green-light to bother you, whether you're in the mood to chat or not, by publicising the fact you're online. Now, Instagram has added a green dot of its own, so all your friends can see your activity status when you're up stalking your ex in bed. It's the latest in a slew of new updates that have allowed you to remove followers without telling them, submit questions to followers on Instagram Stories, add music to your Insta Story and more.

In a blogpost published yesterday, Instagram explained their reason for adding the little green light that alerts people to you being online, saying, "DMing friends and connecting over the content you love is more fun when you know your friends are there to see it. This update gives you the ability to have more of those realtime conversations while giving you the control to hide your status together."

Luckily, for those of us who value discretion, you can shut off Instagram's activity status, so nobody knows if you're online or not.

How to turn off your Instagram activity status:

1. Head to your Instagram settings by tapping the cog icon on your profile

2. Scroll down to the "Privacy and security" section of your settings

3. Tap "Activity status"

4. Toggle the "Show activity status" setting to off

At the moment, you'll only be able to see the online status of friends who follow you, or people you've already DM'd with. But given Instagram's current proclivity for new features, it's impossible to say if it'll stay that way.
