This is Instagram's best update so far.
Instagram has released a new feature that mimics the only thing that makes the latest and most expensive iPhone models barely worth the money. Meet the focus filter.
Instagram's new "focus" fitler
This week, Instagram introduced a new filter to their stories page, called "focus". When you turn focus on, your camera detects the background and blurs it, allowing your selfies to stand out even more. If you're thinking, "hey, doesn't Instagram's focus mode sound a lot like the portrait mode that's available on iPhone 7+ and up?" then you would be correct, because they are basically the same thing. This means that you no longer need a super-expensive phone just to take great selfies.
So I can basically use portrait mode on any phone?
Pretty much, yeah. Instagram's "focus" mode is available on iPhones S, 6S+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+ and X as well as a select few Android phones. You need to be using Instagram version 39.0 to access the feature, so head to the App Store or Google Play to make sure your Instagram app is up to date.
How to find and use "focus mode" on Instagram
To use the new filter, go to stories and you'll find a number of camera modes at the bottom of the screen, including boomerang, rewind and superzoom. Focus is nestled right next to superzoom, so swipe to find it and then take a photo with either the front or back cameras. Easy peasy!
Can you make videos in "focus mode"?
Yes! Just select the filter and then tap and hold, just as you would to create a video in any on Instagram's camera modes.
