We the Unicorns

By Liam Dryden

One single jazz video from 2012 is picking up a lot of attention, as would-be writers everywhere are using it as the inspiration for their next film noir...

It all started with a song - like all great film noir clichés do. There I was, coffee in hand, just another desk monkey in the heart of the big city; another day on the content grind for "We The Unicorns dot com". Little did I know, that the greatest phenomenon YouTube had ever seen would fall dead onto my lap, before we even got to lunch time.

This is the hypnotic writing spell that a random sample of jazz music on YouTube is guaranteed to put you under. Uploaded in 2012, this "film noir" style clip of music has recently become a cult favourite on the internet; because online users are flocking to the comments, to string together their own opening monologues for their imaginary mystery film.

You feel it, right? That sudden need to sit at a typewriter in a private eye's office in the middle of the night; with a glass of whiskey and a deep voice? Well there are plenty of folks on YouTube who are right there with you.

Who would have thought that we all have a bit of Raymond Chandler in us, just waiting for the right musical queue? Suddenly everybody is doing their best Dick Tracy impression while the jazz trumpet stirs our creativity.
