Where can we sign up for this?!
Since she uploaded a video back in October 2015, plus size YouTuber and beauty vlogger Loey Lane has been madly in love with a Little Mermaid-themed bikini. After the gorgeous image of herself standing confident and tall in the bikini on a public beach gained popularity, Loey watched as a heated debate unfolded in the comments section of her video... would Disney ever make a plus size princess?!
With fans praising her appearance, and others questioning whether Disney would ever create a plus size princess because "people always say it's promoting obesity", Loey has found herself right in the middle of an empowering conversation in 2016 - body positivity and representation. Since her original bikini video went live, she uploaded a follow up vlog called "The Not So Little Mermaid" in March 2016 in which she shared her thoughts even more on the topic.
In this new vlog, Loey shares an emotional story of when she went to Disney World on a youth trip with her friends. The children were all asked to write name badges with their favourite Disney princes and princesses on, so as you can expect, she wrote Ariel (btw, her second favourite princess is Snow White!). Unfortunately, before Loey was able to wear her badge, another child stole it, scribbled out Ariel and wrote Ursula, the evil sea witch, in its place.
After seeing her identity being labelled as an "ugly villain", Loey remembers how low it made her feel as a "chubby kid"; "The fact that the closest thing to my body that I could get was Ursula just hurt me so badly as a kid". And so, in an interview with Cosmopolitan, Loey decides that she has had enough and that Disney needs to catch up with body representation - "We have to be vocal and say that it's something that we want... by wearing Disney princess gear and looking beautiful and amazing, and being our own version of a Disney princess, we're really doing that". AMEN!
