MeechOnMars' new short "Be Happy" is an important and entertaining introduction to the discussion of mental health - and its close connection to race.
Based on his collection of goofy videos and Vines, you might not expect MeechOnMars to share a lot of thoughts on mental health or depression. But this is exactly the kind of stigma that he and several of his fellow black male creators hope to break down, with their new short film "" target="_blank">Be Happy".
With the help of Nathan Zed, Victor Pope Jr, Caleon Fox and Caleb Glass, Meech (real name Demetrius Harmon) puts a face to his happiness, depression and even anxiety. In the short, he finds himself surrounded at unwanted moments by his mental health issues. Meech tries to not only find Happiness in those moments, but justify his struggles to those who would have him believe that, as a black man in America, he has more "real world problems" to face.
It's an important discussion that is often overlooked, that mental health can be affected regardless of race or gender. Meech's video opens up the conversation to not only those who may not understand it as a whole, but also those who may overlook signs of depression or anxiety because of their identity.
