YouTube is the most popular social media platform among American 13-17 year olds, beating out rivals Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

According to a study of 743 American teens by the Pew Research Centre, 85% of 13-17 year olds use YouTube, compared with 72% who use Instagram and 69% who use Snapchat. Facebook, once used by 71% of teens in 2015, only managed to entice 51% in 2018.

Is social media good or bad for young people?

The study found that young people aren't decided on whether social media is good for them or not, with 31% saying social media has had a mostly positive effect on them, 24% saying mostly negative, and 45% saying neither positive nor negative.

How often are young people online?

The study also revealed that almost half of 13-17 year olds say they use the internet "almost constantly" with 50% of girls and 39% of boys reporting near-constant internet use.
